A Note from ECM:

ECM debut for Michael Formanek, whose formidable bass has propelled groups from the Mingus Big Band to Tim Berne’s Bloodcount and has backed artists as diverse as Chet Baker and Elvis Costello. A bandleader and composer in his own right, he is heard here with some highly-talented colleagues in an outgoing programme of his own pieces, whose unorthodox constructions set up strong solos and fiery group interaction.

Note from Downtown Music Gallery:

Featuring Joe McPhee on flugel & trumpet, tenor & soprano sax, Dominic Duval on bass and Jay Rosen on drums. Trio X have been together since 1997 and have some ten single discs as well as a 10-CD set on this the same CIMPoL label. I am a longtime fan of this trio and savor each & every release & gig. I am currently working my way through this five CD set from their 2008 tour in New York State, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana & Ohio. Their sets are completely organic, flowing effortlessly through freer terrain and handful of standards like “Motherless Child”, “Old Man River” and “People Get Ready”. The sound quality is consistently strong and the performances ever-engaging. All three members of this wonderful trio get a chance to stretch out and solo and each musician takes advantage of the opportunity. “Motherless Child” is a particularly poignant song to cover and a great choice to do more than once on this tour. Time to get up and switch to another great disc. As I write this (9/15/10) Trio X are leaving for yet another CIMP sponsored tour. Some of you will be experiencing them this week. Lucky for you there is nothing quite like checking them out in person. In the meantime, you can purchase one of these momentous 5 CD sets. – Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
